Blog Assignment # 12
My EDM Blog Post Assignment
I decided for this assignment to create a blog post that would be beneficial for those going into elementary, middle or high school levels. The entire objective of EDM has been to become technologically literate and to learn about all the different technologies and how they are used in today's classroom setting. My blog assignment was inspired by the video we watched called Mr. Winkle Wakes. In that video it shows Mr. Winkle waking after 100 years of sleep to find how the world has completely changed due to technology. The only setting however that Mr. Winkle finds familiar was at a school because nothing had changed and it was exactly how he remembered it from 100 years prior. I stated in my response to the video that I did not entirely agree that the schools today are technologically behind 100 years.
To prove my point the assignment I created will involve looking at a classroom setting from years past and comparing it to what a classroom would look like today. The way I have decided to go about this will be to find a YouTube video of a old show that you grew up watching that involves a classroom scene. Attach a link to the video and in detail recreate the scenes as if it was filmed instead in 2012. The idea is to think about all the new technology we have learned about this semester and show show where and how it would be placed in a old classroom setting.
How I Would Do The Assignment
The show I choose to do for this assignment was one that I grew up watching "Saved By the Bell". The episode is called A Day in Detention which aired in 1992. The show opens with the kids in a classroom and Mr. Belding walks in in front of a chalkboard. Today instead of a chalkboard it would be a Smart Board and today Zack would be talking on a smart phone like a Apple iPhone 5 not a huge portable cell phone. The kids are trying to win tickets from a radio show and the big dilemma is getting out of class to get to the show. If this was filmed today instead of a radio show it would be a live pod cast and instead of having to skip school they could Skype into the show from their laptop computers.
The obvious difference between a classroom in 1992 and 2012 that cell phones would replace the pay phones in the school hallway. The contest requires answering trivia questions and Zack gets stuck on a question. Today his friends could Google the question and simply text it to him. Watching this old episode shows how much different high schools are today due to new technology. To think that 20 years ago when this episode was filmed there was not yet technology like the Internet, Google, Skype or smart phones is very profound. I think its important to view old shows like this and always appreciate how far technology has come in the classroom.

The third teacher I was assigned to was Jarrod Robinson and he is a P.E teacher. Mr. Robinson's blog is called The P.E Geek. The first comment I left was for a post called Augmented Reality in P.E. This post was about a new tool called Augmented Reality and how it is being used now around the world by P.E teachers. I started my comments by introducing myself and telling Mr. Robinson that I enjoyed his blog. I then told him that I looked through the tool and thought it was a great idea to be used in P.E.
The second comment I left was for a post called Music Workout App for Android. This post was about this particular app that is very popular with P.E teachers and fitness instructors. I started my comments by once again telling Mr. Robinson know that I enjoyed his blog. I then told him that I looked through the app and found it to be very interactive and cool. I finished my comments by telling Mr. Robinson that I thought this app would be a great tool to use in P.E classes.

Ms. Cassidy
The video of Ms. Cassidy's first grade classroom was very inspiring to watch. The video featured her first graders and how they used computers and technology in the classroom. The kids took turns narrating the different kinds of technology in which they used in Ms. Cassidy's classroom. The video showed the kids class blogs and the students themselves explaining how they use the blogs. The video also showed the kids using and explaining Skype and the various people they communicate with using the tool.
This video showed how kids as young as 1st grade can use and engage in new technology. I thought it was cool to see the kids using Skype and communicating with other kids as well as experts from around the world. I believe it is important to utilize this new technology because it allowing kids connect with people all over the world. I sometimes think how cool it would have been to have had this technology when I was a kid. I am very excited to be able to one day teach with technology and also to know my children will have access to this new technology from such a young age.
Skype Interview
The interview between Ms. Cassidy and Professor Strange was very informative and interesting. The interview showed Ms. Cassidy explaining how she got involved in technology as a teacher and how it affects her students. One of the most interesting parts of the interview was when Ms. Cassidy told Professor Strange that she had started her class blog five years ago. I was really surprised she had been involved in blogging for so long, seeing as though I myself become aware of blogging only in the past couple of years. Ms. Cassidy also explained how to her young students this technology is simply a part of life and something they take for granted. I totally agree with Ms. Cassidy that this is how it should be to these young students, in that technology is simply a part of life.
I found it also very interesting when Ms. Cassidy addressed the issue of technology being here to stay. I agree that as she put it we as educators can not use the same tools we we did ten years ago or even twenty years ago. I also enjoyed her view on using technology on a elementary level. I myself plan on teaching elementary and I really enjoyed how passionate she was about using technology with elementary level students. Ms. Cassidy also explained how this new technology has allowed the parents to see and be more involved in their kids schooling and I believe that is a huge advantage of using technology like blogs in the classroom.

Blog Assignment # 10
John T. Spencer Cartoon
The John T. Spencer cartoon I will admit was lost on me at first. I read the comments and realized that the cartoon was mocking the Mac/ P C commercials. I think if I were the type of person that was more into computers and brands etc I would have thought the cartoon was more cleaver than I did. I will give Spencer kudos for originality for his cartoon. I also thought the usage of the pencils were very clever and original as well.
Why Were Your Kids Playing Games
The post Why Were Your Kids Playing Games by John T Spencer is hilarious in a very tongue in cheek sort of way. The basis of this post is a teacher is called into the principle's office to be reprimanded for allowing his students to play games in class. It is very clear that this principal does not condone the use of technology in the classroom and only wants students to learn through rote memorization skills. The post underlining message is that this principal represents those in education that want to stunt the use of technology in the classroom and in force as Dr. Strange puts it "burp back education".
Are Pencils Making us Narcissistic?
Are Pencils Making us Narcissistic? by John T Spencer is another funny and enlightening post. The post is also very sarcastic and dipped in tongue in cheek humor. The principal in this post is concerned that the use of pencils are making students narcissistic. I believe the relation of pencils in this post is to today's social media. Social media can indeed create a somewhat narcissistic society. The teacher in this post explains that by using "pencils" the students are really just very eager to communicate. I think that is a good way to look at today's social media and our "plugged in" society. Technology does bring in its share of downfalls however the ability to communicate on a large scale is a huge benefit.
Scott McLeod
Scott McLeod's post Don't Teach Your Kids This Stuff, Please? is very creative and unique. The message McLeod is sending in this post is how ignorant people come across when they try to keep technology out of education. I thought the way he choose to convey this message was very cleaver and entertaining. Scott McLeod is an educator and advocate for technology in education. He is currently the Director of Innovation for the Prairie Lakes Area Education Agency 8 in Iowa and he just completed his first book "What School Leaders Need to know About digital Technologies and Social Media".

Blog Assignment # 9
What I learned This Year
What I learned This Year- Volume 4 (2011-12)
Mr. Joe McClung's essay What I learned This Year-Volume 4( 2011-12) is a very inspirational essay to read for future teachers. Mr. McClung recaps what he learned from his 4th year of teaching and comes up with two major points that he reflects on in the essay. The first point of Mr. McClung's essay is called "You Gotta Dance with Who Brought You to the Dance". Mr. McClung describes how in his fourth year of teaching he began to worry about how his peers viewed him. He stated that worrying about how his peer viewed his teaching only brought him anxiety. Mr. McClung looked over his success as a teacher and realized how focusing on how his kids and if they were enjoying class was much more important than how his peers viewed him.
The second point Mr. McClung talked about in his essay about about he learned his fourth year of teaching was called "Challenge Yourself". In this part of the essay Mr. McClung talked about how he was becoming bored with the subjects he was teaching. Mr. McClung started to feel unchallenged and in response felt like his teaching began to lack. He ended this part of his essay explaining that he would be teaching new subjects in the coming school year and that this was a good change of pace for him.
I think there is a lot to be learned from Mr. McClungs's Essay. It is always valuable to read and learn from experienced teachers and what they have taken from their own experiences. I really liked how Mr. McClung decided to stop fixating on how his peers viewed him. I think this is a good lesson for all occupations. Its not our peers but our students, clients or customers in some cases that matter, for they are who we do our jobs for.I also thought it was very interesting how Mr. McClung stated how he need a change of pace after teaching the same subjects for three years in a row. Once again, I think this is good advise for all occupations. In all careers I think it is important to constantly challenge yourself and refrain for getting stuck and complacent in the same old boring routine.
What I learned This Year (2008-2009)
I really enjoyed Mr. McClung's essay What I learned this Year (2008-2009). it was very interesting to see the transition that Mr. McClung seemingly went through from his essays in 2011-2012. In this essay Mr. McClung stated 7 points that he learned from his first year in teaching. The first point was called "How to read the crowd" this was about focusing on the student audience not just on yourself as a teacher. The next point was called "Be Flexible", this was about him learning not to beat himself up over every lesson plan and activity that did not go just perfect. The third point was called "Communicate", this was a message about how Mr. McClung learned to work and communicate with fellow teachers, another lesson I find valuable in all occupations.
The fourth point of the essay is "Be Resonable", here Mr. McClung explains how he learned not to put to much pressure on his students. My favorite quote from this essay is in this topic which Mr. McClung says "Our job as teachers is to simply pick them up when they fall, dust them them off and encourage them to try again". The next point Mr. McClung addresses is called "Don't Be Afraid of technology". This particular part of the essay reminded me of our EDM 310 class, as Mr. McClung states the importance of technology in the classroom. The sixth point of the essay is "Listen to Your Students" this point is pretty self explanatory and Mr. McClung stresses the importance of letting students know that you are indeed listening to them. Finally the last point of the essay is called "Lastly...Never Stop Learning", this details the importance of while working in a learning environment to soak up as much information as possible.
I thought many valuable lessons can be taken from Mr. McClung's reflections from his 2008-2009 school year. I think it is important for future teachers to read essays like these to prepare themselves for those first few years of teaching. I really enjoyed reading about Mr. McClungs reflections as an educator.

Blog Assignment # 8
This is How We Dream
I found the videos How we Dream Parts 1 and 2 by Richard Miller to be very interesting. The videos detail how technology has dramatically changed how we write on a educational level. Richard Miller explains how technology has changed our society from a reading/writing culture to a watching/listening culture. I believe this video shows the importance of learning to write in multimedia. Future and current educators should be well educated in this new form of media so we can better educate students on this new form of writing.
Richard Miller stated how our culture has changed from a pencil/paper culture to a laptop/desktop one. In today's society so much information is available through online resources. Teaching in this modern era must require using these resources to be proficient in writing in the multimedia. In the video Miller used several examples of how this new form of writing has lead to both incremental and fundamental changes. A fundamental change Miller stated was collaborating with texts, images and videos to make this form of education more appealing to the humanities.
Writing with multimedia is the writing of the future. A big part of this new form of writing is that of sharing ideas. Today so many ideas and information are available online, it is our responsibilities as future educators to be proficient in these new resources. Students as young as elementary level are learning to use these new resources to better gain information. Richard Miller's videos only further prove the importance that teachers and educators should be technologically literate for the future of education.
Carly Pugh
In Carly's Blog Post # 12 she comes up with a fun and exciting assignment to create a YouTube playlist. Carly gave ten questions as to our role as future teachers. Carly then instructed us to choose five questions to describe our teaching philosophies and things we have learned from this class. I think this is a great idea! Creating a playlist using the questions Carly proposed is a great way to use many of the tools we have already learned in our EDM 310 class. Carly's assignment very much touches on Richard Millers notion of writing in multimedia. Carly's assignment requires using online resources and sharing ideas and information with other future educators.
EDM is Different
The Chipper Series and EDM for Dummies are both student produced videos about our EDM 310 class. The videos show much of the frustration many students feel when it comes to EDM 310. The primary message of each of the videos is basically follow the rules, do not procrastinate and turn your assignments in our time. I would like to create a video about how this blog post # 8 seems to never end. I would start the video early on Monday morning and show throughout the week how every time a student thinks they are done with the post there is yet another part of the assignment left to do. The video would end at 11: 59 pm on Sunday night. The exhausted student would be slumped over his computer with a empty pot of coffee beside him barely turning the post in on time.
Learn to Change, Change to Learn
The video Learn to Change, Change to Learn is a great video about how technology is changing in the classroom setting. This video shows the importance of using technology and online resources in education in today's society. The video stated that today with text messaging, emails etc we have students who have a great grasp on communication yet these tools are banned in many schools. The video shows how to first introduce students to these new technologies first we should introduce them to the teachers. The video also showed the importance of teaching students these new technologies so they will be prepared to not only college but life in general.

I think this site is great because it has a tons of information all on one site.

C4T # 2
The second teacher's blog I was assigned to comment on was Mr. Ira Socol. The first post I commented on was about Mr. Socol's trip to Artprize at the World Maker Faire in Michigan. Mr Socol addressed how after visiting this art fair he was reminded of how low the arts are valued in our current school system. He addressed how the current "western" way of education came to take precedence in our school systems leaving every little room for any art programs. Mr Socol used many examples of how the arts can and should be included in teaching other subjects such as science. I started my comment my introducing myself and letting Mr Socol know how much I enjoyed reading this post. I then told him that I totally agreed with his view of art in the school system. I told Mr Socol that I had never thought of using art to teach other subjects but that it was very enlightening and I agreed it was a great idea.
The second post of Mr Socol's that I commented on had to do with teaching students about the current election process. Mr Socol wrote that he believed students should be looking at the election process from different angles. In the post he addressed several questions that he thought would be good for allowing students to examine the election process on a broader scale. I started my comment by telling Mr Socol that I really enjoyed his post. I let him know I agreed that students should examine these different perspectives of the election process. I then commented on how some of the questions were very interesting for both adults and students to be learning about their local government and election process.

Blog Assignment # 7
The Networked Student
The Networked Student by Wendy Drexler is a very interesting video. The video expands on modern day techniques in which technology is replacing traditional teaching techniques. The networked student uses the example of a student in a physiology class researching and learning about the human psyche. The class does not have a textbook and the teacher rarely lectures. The class is built around connectivism, which means using various online resources to gather information on the subject at hand. The class represented in the video encourages students to take control of their own learning. The Networked Student reminds me a lot of what we are doing in EDM 310.
The Networked Student encourages students to be self learners. The video shows how a student will build a database on the subject from various online resources and then share the information with fellow classmates and teachers. The student must learn to find information using tools such as google, skype and other online resources. The student can connect with professors and other students from all over the world to gain information on any particular subject. The way this class is conducted verses traditional teaching techniques proves to be most useful in the limitless access to information available through modern technology.
The approach to the teaching expressed in The Networked Student shows a different role than that of the more traditional teaching methods of the past. The teacher in this particular type of classroom setting acts as a mentor that helps guide the student in the right direction. The teacher in The Networked Student helps the student build and organize his network. I think it is important to teach students to be self learners. Teachers have the responsibility to motivate and guide these students as they learn techniques in which they can learn to educate themselves.
A 7th Grader's Personal Learning Environment or (PLN)
I was so impressed when I watched the video A 7th Grader's Personal Learning Environment or (PLN). I wish I could have been as motivated and organized as the student in the video when I was in 7th grade! The video showed how 7th grade students in a science class use the Internet and online resources to gather information from around the world. The student in the video explained how much freedom this style of class allows her. Freedom is a great thing for young students to have because it often teaches them to be responsible.
The student in the videos PLN is very similar to my own PLN. I also have to use the Internet and online resources to expand and gather information from around the world. I also use technology to help expand my database of information from various sources online. I related to the student in the video when she mentioned how social networking sites such as Facebook were often distracting. I found it wonderful to hear the student in this video explain how technology helps engage students to learn over traditional book learning.

Blog Assignment # 6
Randy Pausch's Last Lecture
Randy Pausch's Last Lecture was one of most inspiring and inspirational videos I have watched in a long time. The focus of this last lecture is about achieving your childhood dreams. Randy talked in detail about his childhood dreams how he achieved some and not others but learned something from each of them. Randy also spoke a lot about his career as an educator and some of the lessons he learned through the years from fellow educators and students alike. I believe that much can be applied from Randy's last lecture in teaching and life in general.
Randy spoke of wanting to be in the NFL as one of his childhood dreams. He did not achieve this dream but he learned some valuable life lessons from his coaches. Randy spoke of the importance of learning fundamentals from his early football experiences. I also played youth sports and some of those early childhood lesson I learned from my coaches have also stuck with me till this day. I believe as teachers and coaches it is extremely important to encourage children to have dreams even if they may seem unrealistic. The lessons learned from sometimes not achieving these dreams are the lessons that often we will carry with us into adulthood.
My favorite part of Randy's lecture was when he spoke about brick walls. Randy used many examples from his own life to show how he overcame certain obstacles to achieve his dreams. Randy spoke often about dreams and how brick walls only stop those that do not want their dreams badly enough. I was reminded of my own middle school and high school youth minister who often spoke of "dream stealers". Dream stealers are people in life that as Randy put it are brick walls made of flesh. I believe it is very important for teachers to explain the importance of brick walls to young students. Life is full of brick walls and life is full of dream stealers. We as students and teachers must express the importance of not allowing those brick walls to stop us from achieving our dreams in education, jobs, relationships and life in general.
Randy spoke passionately about the classes and programs that he helped pioneer at Carnegie Mellon. I loved when Randy spoke about his students and what he learned from them. I believe that is one of the best things about teaching, when a educator can learn from their students. Randy Pausch had a clear passion for reaching and inspiring students. I feel if all teachers were as passionate about changing their students lives there would be more of us out there like Randy Pausch.
I will be honest when Randy's last lecture ended I literally had tears in my eyes. Randy Pausch was a man that embraced life and he embraced death. I believe everyone can take a page from Randy Pausch. He was a man that believed in holding on to childhood dreams and was not afraid of failure. Randy spoke passionately about the legacy he will leave behind and how proud he was of it. I can only hope that one day I can reach as many students as Randy reached. My goal for my life is to leave a legacy that I also can be very proud of at the end of my life.

C4K # 1 Summary
Sosaia
I started my comment by introducing myself. I explained that I was in school to be a teacher and that I was just learning to blog. I told Keis that I very much enjoyed reading his blog about the Paralympics. I commented that it is often difficult to do something in a different way than your normally used to. I ended my comments by once again telling Keis that I really enjoyed his blog and that I could tell he enjoyed the Paralympics.
Sosaia was the first kid I was assigned to comment on and she is in year 5 at the Pt England School. Sosaia's post was about her class playing basketball during their P.E hour. The class was lead by the two coaches from the school, one of whom Sosaia does not know his name but calls him Matt. Sosaia went into detail about how much fun the class had regardless of the fact that they lost the game.
I started my comment by introducing myself. I explained that I was in school to be a teacher and that I was just learning to blog. I told Sosaia that I also enjoyed playing basketball when I was younger in school. I explained to Sosaia that here in the US it is currently football season and that football is a very popular sport in the state of Alabama. I commented on how I thought it was very good that Sosaia still enjoyed the game even though her team lost. I told her that my football team the Auburn Tigers were having a bad season but I also try to still enjoy watching the games.
Keis
Keis was the second kid I was assigned to comment on. Keis also goes to the Pt England School and is also in year 5. Keis blog post was about the Paralympics events held at his school. Keis explained how they were instructed to run with one arm tucked in and that this made him run at a very slow pace. Keis was also instructed to throw a ball with one arm tucked in, he said that he thought this was a bad idea so he said "NO".

Blog Assignment # 5
The iSchool Initiative
The iSchool Initiative by Travis Allen was a very interesting video to watch. Travis Allen was a high school student when he came up with the idea of the ischool. The ischool is a concept for the future in which ipod touch technology will be used exclusively in the classroom replacing paper, books, pencils ect. The idea behind the ischool is that the educational apps that can already be found on current ipod touch technology if used primarily in schools can save over 600 dollars per student a year. Travis Allen also believes this ischool initiative will be excellent for the environment due to less trees being cut down for paper to be processed. The ischool initiative is a revolutionary idea and shows the huge role technology will play in the classroom in the future.
I think the ischool initiative is a great idea. I believe that if these resources are already available they should definitely be put to use in the current public school systems. I know that many public school systems all over the country are struggling financially and this idea just might possibility be one of the solutions. I know personally that this EDM310 class not requiring a textbook has been very helpful financially considering the average textbook cost well over 100 dollars. I think the ischool initiative will also motivate students out of the old classroom grind and get them exited about their school work.
Eric Whitacre's Virtual Choir
Eric Whitacre's Virtual Choir was a visually amazing video to watch. The video shows hundreds of singers singing in harmony via internet to 'Lux Aurumque'. The amazing thing about this video is that none of the singers have ever met in person. The virtual choir was just another amazing example of the awesome things that technology can make happen.
Teaching in the 21st Century
The video Teaching in the 21st Century by Kevin Roberts was very interesting. The basis for this video is that in today's society with limitless access to information the role teachers play have drastically changed. The internet has become the main source of information replaces teachers. Technology has now changed how educators teach. Teaching in the 21st century requires combining these new technologies to apply and analyze the vast information available online. Future teachers such as myself now need to be knowledgeable in the latest technologies. Teaching in the 21st century means utilizing tools like Google,Twitter, Skype and Wikipedia in the classroom and using these tools to better educate students.
Flipping The Classroom
I loved the concept of flipping the classroom shown in the videos Why I Flipped My Classroom, Dr. Lodge McCammon's FIZZ-flipping the classroom and Flipping the Classroom-4th Grade STEM. The main idea behind flipping the classroom is to engage students in web videos of the assignment or lecture the night before class. The class time then can be used to applying the lessons instead of lecturing most of the time. I thought that what Katie Gimbar a math teacher said in the video was very interesting about teaching to only the middle of the class. Flipping the class allows students on a slower pace to catch up and for students at a higher pace to advance at their own pace.
I think flipping the classroom is a great idea. I think that for subjects such as math this concept would be especially helpful. Math is a subject in which students often move at very different paces or need extra attention in certain areas. I would definitely love to try this approach in my own classroom one day. I think flipping the classroom is another great way to use technology to break students out of the daily grind of the classroom and engage them in learning.

Blog Assignment # 4
Podcast
I will be perfectly honest, before this blog assignment I had heard the term "podcast" but did not have a very clear idea to what it actually was. After reading Ms. Silvia Rosenthal's blog Langwitches I now have a much clearer idea of what a podcast is and how to do one. A podcast is a type of digital media that can be streamed online to a computer or mobile device. I was amazed to learn that while I am just now learning about podcasting, there are many first graders that already have participated in many podcast.
In the blog 1st Graders Create Their Own Read-Along Audiobook I leaned even more on how podcast can be used in a classroom setting. The students in this class were learning to podcast by recording scrips from a story called Vacation under the Volcano. The students then read along to their own podcast. This blog demonstrated how engaged the students were in recording and hearing their own voices in the podcast. I think this idea of using a tool like pod casting to engage children in reading is an amazing idea.
In Listening-Comprehension-Podcasting on the Langwitches blog expanded on the idea of using podcasting to better help language learners. This post detailed how a group of 2nd graders were learning the story Purim to record as a podcast and share with their parents on their classroom blog. The children worked with their Hebrew studies teacher to properly record the story of Purim. The tool Garageband was also introduced to help the students piece together their podcast. This post focused on how podcasting used script writing, listening, comprehension, collaboration, speaking skills and fluency in the target language.
The post Space Real Estate Agents detailed how a entire classroom pieced together a podcast. The students first listened to some sample podcast, then started brainstorming on scenarios for their storyline. The students then booked time in their computer lab where they began experimenting with Garageband. Garageband helped them learn about tracks, background music, splitting, editing and moving tracks. The students then wrote their scripts for the project. Next the students exported their segment and imported the files in Garageband and arranged the segments in order. This post was the most helpful to me. The podcast these students pieced together has given me many ideas for my own future podcast.

C4T #1
The first teacher I was assigned to comment on is a middle school teacher named Hadley Ferguson. Her blog is called The Middle School Matrix. Brain Flashes was the first post I commented on. The post was about the overwhelming dilemma of having to start a new school year after having the summer off. She spoke very passionately about wanting to find a hook for her new students and wanting them to want to be back in the classroom.
The comment I left for her addressed how I really enjoyed seeing her clear passion for her students. I also commented on how it was interesting to me to see that even experienced educator's can feel overwhelmed at the start of a new school year. I also addressed how I found be ability to work through stressful situations and keep her students best interest at heart to be very encouraging. I really enjoyed this post, this teacher's passion for her students is amazing.
The second post that I commented on from Mrs. Ferguson's blog was called Primary Sources-Week 1. In this post Mrs. Ferguson described how she used an activity that she got from the Library of Congress' blog for teachers to engage her student's on the first day of school. The activity was to use a photo of yourself as a child as a means to teach on primary sources. Mrs. Ferguson expanded on this idea and used a large collection of her family photos, one of each on each desk in the classroom. The students were then instructed to move from desk to desk examining each photo and attempt to piece together to connection of all the pictures. The students were at first a bit confused but eventually began to take note of the style of the different eras, the familiar people in the same pictures and the different backgrounds. The students studied all the photos and eventually did come to the conclusion that the pictures were of Mrs. Ferguson and her family.
The started my comments on the post by stating how wonderful it is to have resources such as the Library of Congress' blog to teachers as a source for exciting and new ideas to help engage students in learning. I also commented on how I thought it was very inspiring how Mrs. Ferguson wanted to use this activity as a hook to get her students interested in American history from the very first day of school. The student's responses to Mrs. Ferguson's family photos were very delightful. The responses Mrs. Ferguson received about her pictures were just one of the many things that make teaching such a delight. I ended my comment by stating once again that Mrs. Ferguson's passion for teaching is quite clear and also very inspiring.

Blog Assignment # 3
Peer Editing
I enjoyed watching the videos What is Peer Editing? and Peer Edit With Perfection Tutorial. The tutorials helped me gain much insight on how to write a better peer review. The three steps of peer editing according to the video's are: compliments, suggestions and corrections. I personally have found that the easiest part of peer editing is giving compliments. Suggestions are important because gaining insight from a second party helps us become better learners. I hate to correct other people's mistakes, however this is an important part of peer editing. The peer you are editing has the right to know where they have made a mistake so they may correct the mistake. The key to correcting in peer editing is to do so is a positive way! Remember, making mistakes is part of the learning process.
I loved the video Writing Peer Review the Top 10 Mistakes. My favorite of all the characters from the video was Off-Task Oliver, how cute was he! Peer editing is certainly not as easy as it may seem. The characters in the video did a great job of summarizing the common mistakes made in peer editing. In order to write a positive, constructive peer review we should all try to avoid being a "Picky Patty" or a "Pushy Paula". As a critic, being picky or pushy is not a positive way to critique a peer. I also found that when reading your own peer review it is important to avoid being a "Defensive Dave". Positive criticism is important, do not take it personally like "Defensive Dave".
Adaptive Technologies in Special Education
Technology in Special Education was a very inspiring video to watch. The special education teacher in the video detailed how technology has profoundly helped the students in her classroom. Laptop computer's have allowed students to type assignments when it is difficult for them to write. Students who are vision or hearing impaired use laptops to be able to see and hear better. Technology is a great tool for students with special needs.
There are many ways to use technology to work with special needs students. As a future teacher, I am looking forward to using new technology be better educate students with special needs. Technology such as i pads and laptops are great tools for student's who have difficultly speaking. This new technology makes communication via typing easier for the student. Technology has also made reading easier for many students. Student's that require auditory reading may use laptops to read and hear their assignments at the same time. Special education is often a challenge, however new and exciting technologies are being invented everyday to better help educate students with special needs
The video How the i pad Works with Academics for Autism shows how Braden a 3rd grade boy with autism uses the i pad to practice counting and writing. Braden's parents claim that the i pad has helped excite Braden about learning. Braden is yet another example of how technology can be used to work with students with special needs.
I was so impressed by looking through the many educational apps that Apple has to offer. One app that I particularly liked is called LetterSchool. LetterSchool is a game that helps students learn about numbers, letters, writing, counting and phonics. This particular app is a great tool to help teach students proper handwriting. As a teacher, I would use this app to help children with special needs practice their handwriting skills. The LetterSchool app can be used to practice writing in a similar way that Braden used the i pad to do so.
Harness Your Students' Digital Smarts
In the video Harness Your Students' Digital Smarts it shows how teacher Vicki Davis uses all kinds of different technology to connect her students to the world. Teacher's like Ms. Davis are the type of people that get me excited about teaching. This video was an amazing example of how technology can influence students on a large scale. It was exciting to see how just like the school Ms. Davis teaches at in Southern Georgia technology can also take students right here in Southern Alabama around the whole world.
The best advice I took from Ms. Davis was when she said that a big misconception in teaching is thinking you must know everything about a particular subject. I had never thought about teaching in that particular way. I loved how she explained how empowered students feel when they break new ground in technology and figure it out for themselves. The role of technology in the classroom has certainly changed since I was in high school. I can not wait to see how far technology will go by the time I have children in high school!

The role of technology in the classroom has certainly changed since I was in high school. I can not wait to see how far technology will go by the time I have children in high school!

Blog Assignment # 2
Did You Know?
I found Professor Strange's version of Did You Know 3.0 to be quite eye opening. The facts mentioned in the video regarding the comparison of the United Sates and other countries were quite startling. It surprised me to find that 25 percent of the population of India had higher IQ's than the entire population of the US. The fact that 18 million Chinese speak English now and 300 are "learners" was very shocking to me. It was very unsettling to see the fact from the video that if these "learners" do learn English, more people in China will speak English than the entire population of the United States. The video also focused on how rapidly technology is changing in our society. I find it interesting how important learning new technology is, because it directly affects future employment. Teaching new technology is a very important role for current and future educators, because this will effect the next generation's ability to find employment in our technologically driven society. I believe this video showed how important it is for the US to catch up with other countries on an educational level. The video also stressed the importance of the role educator's play is utilizing our student's with the best education for the technology of the future.
The Did You Know version by Karl Fisch and Scott McLeod contained even more information on how technology has dramatically changed society. The emphasis from this video seemed to be how new technology has affected our personal and professional lives as a society in general. I found the fact that one out of eight couples married in the US in the last year met online shows the profound impact the internet has made on our society. The video makes a very interesting point of showing how fast modern technology has grown. It took the radio 38 years to reach a market audience, TV took 13, the internet took 4, the ipod 3 and Facebook 2 years. The facts presented in this video show how important it is for educators to enlighten the next generation on the future's technology. Educator's in today's society must be prepared to address issues of technology that has not even been invented yet. We live in a technology driven society and it is rapidly changing every day. Educator's today and in the future must take on the challenge of staying of ahead of the latest technology so we can best educate our next generation.
Mr. Winkle Wakes
Mr. Winkle Wakes by Mathew Needleman is a very interesting video. The synopsis of this video is that Mr. Winkle wakes after being asleep for 100 years to find the world has completely changed. Mr. Winkle first goes to an office building where he encounters computers, printers, fax machines ect. Mr. Winkle is very overwhelmed to see this technology that is totally foreign to him. Mr. Winkle then goes to a hospital and finds more technology he has never seen. The video leads to Mr. Winkle going to a school and feeling a sense of calm and familiarity because the school was exactly the same as he remembered it to be. The video shows bored students taking notes as a teacher lectures all day. The one computer he finds in the school is dusty and unused.
Mathew Needleman is sending a powerful message with this video on how he feels the school system has been left out of the modern world. The professional world has advanced, with Mr. Winkle seeing business people communicating via internet from across the world. The medical community has also made great advancements, such as Mr. Winkle seeing patients kept alive by respirators. I however, do not completely agree that the school system as a whole is technologically behind 100 years. I work in various schools in Mobile County and have seen where computer's and technology in the classroom have come a long way since I was in school. I do agree that the latest technology should be in the classroom and available to all students.
The Importance of Creativity
Sir Ken Robinson's video The Importance of Creativity was very funny and enlightening. I agree with Robinson that the structure of academic's in schools today is depleting creativity in our students. A very interesting point of the video was when he stated how in every culture in the world the arts are at the bottom of the academic structure. I also totally agree with Robinson that creativity is as important in education as literacy. I feel educator's should implement as much creativity into every subject as well as show a stronger emphasis on the arts.
The story in the video about the lady that choreographed the musical CATS is a great example of why the arts are so important in schools. The schools today are full of students who are just like the lady in the video that need to "move to think". The future dancers, musicians, artist and painters are being robbed in our school system because the importance of creativity has been minimized. I find it sad that creativity is not being encouraged in the classrooms. I hope as a future educator that I can bring out creativity in my students because as Sir Ken Robinson stated "creativity is as important as literacy".
A Day Made of Glass
The video A Day Made of Glass 2 is visually amazing to watch. The clip shows us a futuristic view of what the technology of tomorrow will look like. The video focuses on glass and how glass has replaced all of the technology we have today. The video A Day Made of Glass 2: Unpacked. The Story Behind Corning's Vision elaborates on the specific technology featured in the video. I found it amazing how our cell phones, computers, TV's and pretty much all modern technology had been replaced by this touch screen type interactive glass. The synopsis of this video is that glass is the technology of the future, how near or far in the future is yet to be known.
The A Day Made of Glass and the Mr. Winkle Wakes video's show a huge difference in technology being using in the classroom. In A Day Made of Glass it shows the teacher using the interactive glass technology to get her class engaged and excited about learning. Mr. Winkle Wakes showed how lack of modern technology made students bored and disinterested in learning. I took from A Day Made of Glass how important it is for educator's to be on top of the latest technology because that technology be will a key factor in teaching in the future.

Blog Assignment # 1
About Me
Hi! My name is Danielle Gideon, I am a Mobile native and a University of South Alabama graduate. I obtained my B.A in 2007 in Communications and this is my first semester back at USA in 5 years! I have a awesome and supporting family that I could not live without. My father passed away in 2005, but his memory remains very close to me. I am extremely close to my Mom, and I have a great Step Dad that has become a huge part of my life. I am the oldest in the family. My little sister and her fiancee are both Auburn University graduates and currently live in Montgomery. I am also blessed to have a best friend of 22 years, who is truly like a sister to me. My home away from home is her awesome condo in Destin, Florida, which you can find me at any holiday, weekend or summer vacation! When I am not at the beach, I love college football (War Eagle!), cooking, reading and enjoying life on the gulf coast with my family and friends.
I have been working as a substitute teacher for the past two years for the Mobile County public school system. I have worked in various schools and in grades K5-high school. My work as a substitute has driven me to obtain my second degree in elementary education. My experience in the Mobile County school system as been a great learning experience. I truly believe teachers have some of the most important jobs on earth. I have a passion to work with children on a elementary level. I want to be a teacher because I want to make a positive impact on children's lives and get them excited about education.
Randy Pausch Video on Time Management
I enjoyed Randy Pausch's video on time management. I found it interesting when he was discussing how Americans are often not good at managing time. I myself am guilty of not utilizing my time as efficiently as I would like to. I liked the idea of organizing goals and keeping lists for each day, week and semester to help stay on track. The best tip I got from the video was when Dr. Pausch suggested doing the task you least want to do first. I have personally found that when you knock out the most challenging obstacle the rest tends to fall in place. My goal is to use the tips and idea's presented in this video to mange my time efficiently for this class and all my classes this fall semester.
Penn State on Time Management
I gained some really good tip's on time management from reading the Penn State pages on the issue. I really liked the idea of using a planner, I tend to stay on track when I can visually see my schedule. The issue of wasting time also hit home with me. Facebook is probably where I waste more time in a single day. My goal for this semester is to not get on Facebook until all of my class assignments are up to date.
